European Patent Attorney - SHL Group Medical SHL Medical AG is seeking a European Patent Attorney to join our new headquarters in Zug, Switzerland. This is an opportunity to join the global leader in auto-injector technology whose growth and industry leadership relies upon protecting and promoting a strong intellectual property portfolio and continuous innovation. This position of European Patent Attorney would be a part of the Global Patent Group within the SHL Legal Department and would report directly to the Director, Global Intellectual Property. You would work in close collaboration with other members of the Global Patent Group in Asia, Europe and the United States, as well as inventors and product managers based in Zug as well as those working in SHL’s Taiwan, Sweden and Florida operations. The role would be a part of a collaborative effort with innovators and IP practitioners focused on defining, qualifying and supporting SHL in obtaining patents. For the position of European Patent Attorney at SHL, the successful candidate will be someone with the knowledge, experience and interests relating to the following duties and responsibilities:
Prepare/draft new patent applications for inventions. Prosecute office action responses, including responses to office actions before the European Patent Office (EPO) as well as providing detailed guidance to non-EPO associates for the preparation of responses to office actions also in other jurisdictions. Work autonomously to manage a portfolio of cases and associated prosecution deadlines, whilst also being able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within both the Global Patents Group and wider cross-functional teams on other projects. Prepare divisional applications as appropriate. Prepare patent claims aligned with products. Prepare claim charts as needed. Prepare oppositions and observations by 3rd parties. Solve problems presented to the group and also improve the operational effectiveness of the Patent Prosecution team.
You have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering, hard sciences or equivalent. You have at least 3 years of relevant patent prosecution experience, ideally in the med tech/medical devices field or the broader tech industry. You are a qualified European Patent Attorney, or close to becoming one. You have the ability to analyse complex mechanisms, devices and mechanical interactions. You are curious, a fast learner and an extremely organized person. Fluency in English language is essential, both written and spoken.
In addition, the successful candidate will have strong time-management skills and be able to work independently. You also have excellent communication skills and enjoy working in a global, cross-cultural team with a genuine commitment to a flat organizational culture. Along with your attention to detail, you also are able to multi-task as well as prioritise among your different assignments, all while maintaining a high level of ethics and a great sense of responsibility.
