Faculty of Arts and Education English Syllabus Course Approval The syllabus was approved by the Faculty Board of Arts and Education on 4 December 2012 , and is valid from the Autumn semester of 2013 at Karlstad University. Course Code: ENGLX4 English: Language Acquisition in Theory and Practice (years 4-6), 7.5 ECTS Credits (Engelska: Språkinlärning i teori och praktik (skolår 4-6), 7.5 Swedish credit points) Degree Level: Bachelor Progressive Specialisation: G1N (First cycle, has only upper-secondary level entry requirements) Language of Instruction English with some components in Swedish Prerequisites General admission requirements and field-specific eligibility 2 barring a second foreign langauge Major Field of Study Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - outline the main features of central language acquisition theories and discuss these in relation to national curricular goals for the subject English in primary education, - plan and discuss the teaching and assessing of English in primary education, - give an account of theories to stimulate students' language development in varying ways and give examples of how to implement them. Content and Form of Instruction The course comprises the following components: - the main features of central theories on language acquisition and approaches to language and their relation to curricular goals and the teaching of English, - methods to transform theoretical knowledge into varied and stimulating teaching practice - ways of assessing and testing learners linguistic ability and plan for their continued development, - choosing literature and methods of work with consideration to the gender perspective - oral and written exercises. Assessement is based on: Learning outcomes 1 and 2: individual, written exam. Learning outcome 3: individual, oral presentation Grades One of the grades Distinction (VG), Pass (G), or Fail (U) is awarded in the examination of the course. Quality Assurance Follow-up relating to learning conditions and goal-fulfilment takes place both during and upon completion of the course in order to ensure continuous improvement. Course assessment is based on student views and experiences as reported in written course evaluations and/or group discussions. Students will be informed of the result of the evaluation and of the measures to be taken. Course Certificate A course certificate will be provided upon request. Additional Information Students who enrolled before 1 July 2007 will complete their studies in accordance with the requirements of the earlier admission. Upon completion students may request degree and course certificates to be issued under the current ordinance if they meet its requirements. The local regulations for studies at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels at Karlstad University stipulate the obligations and rights of students and staff.
